Artist spotlight: Exploding Sun

Whenever you catch a performance by Exploding Sun, prepare for a memorable evening led by the dynamic front-man, Tom Habich. His illustrious history on stages of legendary NYC venues like CBGB's, Kenny's Castaways, The Cat Club, and Nirvana adds a deep authenticity to the band's resonance. After making his move to Hampton Roads in the early '90s, it wasn't long before Habich birthed the phenomenon known as Exploding Sun.

With accolades including five-time nominations and a win for "Best Rock" in Veer magazine, their fusion of hard-edged pop, blues rock, melodic indie, and folk assures a gripping act. Their recent offering, the "TRUESONIC" album, not only bagged an honorable mention from Veer for Album of the Year but also featured on WHRO's "Out of the Box," underscoring their evolving sonic journey.

Boasting over 1,200 performances from the vibrant heart of NYC to Virginia's rich landscapes, Exploding Sun stands as a testament to Tidewater's musical heritage. The upcoming gig is more than just a performance; it's a homage to musical excellence and tenacity. And let's not overlook Tom's guitar work – ever crunchy and pulsating with energy.

Exploding Sun, a band with a name inspired by a Leonard Nimoy TV special about Supernovas, has been a driving force in the alternative rock scene for an impressive three decades. Comprising members Tom Habich, Mike Perez, and Rich Phelps, Exploding Sun's journey is a testament to their enduring passion for music.

Tom Habich, the lead singer, guitar player, and songwriter, stands at the forefront of the band's creative process. His musical journey began at a young age, influenced by his grandfather, a multi-instrumentalist. Mike Perez takes on the role of the bass player, while Rich Phelps keeps the rhythm alive as the drummer.

Their music is a fusion of guitar-driven alternative rock, with influences ranging from Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin to REM and Counting Crows. Within their music, themes of redemption, new beginnings, hope, perseverance, and unrequited love often resonate with their listeners.

Exploding Sun's history dates back to 1993 when Tom was introduced to Mike after releasing a solo record. Together, they added a drummer in 1994 and embarked on their musical journey as Exploding Sun. Their first full-length album was recorded at Windmark Recording, marking the beginning of their live performances throughout Hampton Roads.

Over the years, Tom has been the primary songwriter, contributing to nine full-length studio albums, including his solo release in 1993. Their music reflects a deep connection with their themes, making their performances memorable and emotionally charged.

As for the future, Exploding Sun is currently working on a four-song EP scheduled for release by the end of 2023. This project promises to showcase their best work yet, with exceptional songs, recordings, and performances.

When it comes to live shows, Exploding Sun is known for delivering an experience that goes beyond the typical trio. Their music fills the venue with a sound that resonates deeply with their audience, and their performances are hailed as second to none.

While there are no specific tour details to share at the moment, the band is focused on scheduling local shows across Hampton Roads. Their preparation for live performances involves reflection on their musical journey and gratitude for their supporters.

For emerging artists, their advice is to persevere, strive for excellence, and never give up. The best part of being in a successful band, they say, is sharing their passion and having it resonate with people who truly care. The only downside, as they humorously note, is that as the years go by, even the equipment seems to get heavier.

Exploding Sun's three-decade journey through the alternative rock scene is a testament to their enduring love for music, and their future projects promise to add more exciting chapters to their story. You can pick up his CD Lock,Stock & Barrel on Amazon!
