Reviving the 90s: Toad the Wet Sprocket Brings Nostalgia and Energy to Red Bank

Toad the Wet Sprocket delivered a captivating performance on August 20, 2024, at the Hackensack Meridian Health Theatre in Red Bank, NJ, opening for the Gin Blossoms. Despite being the second act of the night, following Vertical Horizon, the band made a strong impression with their melodic rock sound and heartfelt lyrics, bringing a wave of 90s nostalgia to the eager audience.

They started with “Something's Always Wrong,” immediately drawing the crowd in with Glen Phillips' soulful voice and the band’s familiar, warm sound. Moving into “Woodburning” and “California Wasted,” they showed off their knack for blending catchy tunes with thoughtful lyrics, keeping everyone engaged from the first note. Todd Nichols' guitar work added a rich layer to the songs, perfectly complementing Phillips' emotive singing.

The setlist was a mix of classic hits and newer songs, including “Come Down” and “Hold On.” These tracks highlighted the band's ability to connect with the audience, who sang along and cheered, clearly moved by the timeless themes of introspection and hope in the lyrics. One of the standout moments was an acoustic version of “Good Intentions,” featuring Jonathan King on mandolin. This stripped-back performance allowed the lyrics to shine, creating an intimate and memorable experience.

A surprise highlight came when the band covered R.E.M.’s “Driver 8,” joined on stage by Robin Wilson from Gin Blossoms and Matt Scannell from Vertical Horizon. This collaboration brought a fun, spontaneous energy to the stage, and the audience loved it, cheering loudly for the unexpected treat.

As the set continued, Toad the Wet Sprocket played fan favorites like “All I Want” and “Walk on the Ocean,” which were met with enthusiastic singing and applause from the crowd. They closed with “Fall Down,” ending on a high note with its upbeat rhythm and catchy chorus. The audience gave them a standing ovation, clearly moved by the band's performance.
