Released by Abraxan Hymns on September 15, 2023, Baroness unveils their latest musical endeavor, "STONE." This release embodies the signature Baroness touch, enriched by the band's refreshed synergy and vision.
Rock aficionados, rejoice! Baroness, with their sixth masterpiece, "STONE," offers yet another musical journey under the banner of their independent label, Abraxan Hymns. Hailing from Philadelphia, the ensemble comprises John Baizley (guitarist, vocalist, and artist), Gina Gleason (guitarist), Nick Jost (bassist), and Sebastian Thomson (drummer). In "STONE," they refine their vast multi-faceted metal soundscape into a sharper, cohesive auditory experience.
The initial triad of tracks from "STONE" - "Shine," "Beneath The Rose," and "Last Word" - exemplify Baroness in their prime. These tunes blend introspection, rhythm, and raw power seamlessly. "Shine" evolves subtly, culminating in explosive riffs that captivate. It provides a brief respite, only to crescendo into an exhilarating finale reminiscent of a kaleidoscopic rock journey. "Beneath The Rose" entrances listeners with mesmerizing guitar rhythms and drum beats, transitioning into formidable guitar sequences accompanied by haunting vocals. "Last Word" is a headlong rush, bursting with energy, before mellowing into an anthemic chorus, echoing with the intensity of a final proclamation.
Crafting "STONE" was an intriguing journey. While Baizley spearheaded the songwriting and preliminary mixes, instrumental recordings preceded vocal sessions in Baizley's rustic Pennsylvania basement. The album then received its sonic sheen from Joe Barresi's mixing prowess (celebrated for his association with Kyuss and Alice In Chains) and mastering genius Bob Ludwig (associated with legends like Led Zeppelin and Nirvana).
Beyond its auditory brilliance, "STONE" is a visual treat. The vinyl edition boasts a UV highlighted gatefold jacket, complemented by a sturdy printed inner sleeve and detailed lyric booklet. The CD variant comes encased in a meticulous six-panel wallet, accompanied by its lyric booklet, whereas the cerulean cassette version features a unique j-card. Die-hard fans can indulge in the deluxe CD set, enriched with six live performances from their acclaimed 2022 "By Request" tour. The album's artwork, another Baizley masterpiece, underscores his multifaceted artistic genius.
Baroness's legacy is rich, with accolades like a Grammy nomination for "Shock Me" from their 2015 "Purple" album, and recognition from Rolling Stone for being among the top metal albums of 2015. With a discography featuring gems like "Gold & Grey" (2019), "Purple" (2015), "Yellow & Green" (2012), "Blue Record" (2009), and "Red Album" (2007), Baroness fortifies their status as torchbearers in the rock and metal domain with "STONE."
